Imperfect Produce Review

We only recently signed up to start getting our veggies delivered with Imperfect Produce. During the process, we learned some fascinating things about how produce works in the US. Did you know that 1 in 5 veggies and fruits are too ugly to be sold in the store? The food is still completely healthy and edible. If a product is deemed too ugly, it is thrown away or put into compost. That is a staggering amount of food wasted because it doesn’t live up to cosmetic standards.

Imperfect saw this problem as an opportunity to create something amazing. They discovered that farms would sell this ugly fruit and veggies for over 50% off. Imperfect decided to box up the ugly produce and ship it out to customers in the Bay Area and LA. The best part is they pass almost all of the savings onto the customer. We spent under $15 buying the box for our Imperfect produce review.

Our First Box

We loved everything about our first box. Imperfect includes an infographic that shows which veggies are stored in the fridge. We ordered the small box for our Imperfect Produce Review, yet we wondered if they had sent us a large. There was easily 2-3 meals of food for two people.

True to their word, a lot of the vegetables were ugly. We were especially pleased with a grotesque shaped onion. We were surprised by how many of the vegetables looked surprisingly normal. Either the Bay area has higher produce standards, or we are blind to vegetable beauty.

All the product was fresh and dry, which is always a worry when getting food in the mail (e.g. A few of the boxes we got from Hello Fresh had produce that was already wilting). We waited a few days to eat some of the Imperfect Produce items, and they stayed fresh the whole time. The veggies tasted better than store bought—more like something fresh from a Farmer’s Market.

We recommend the imperfect produce box to customers who:

  • Don’t Mind Eating less than perfect produce
To us, it wasn’t even all that ugly. One of the onions was heart-shaped, but we actually found that pretty cute. But maybe in the future we’ll see something uglier.
  • Want to Eat healthy for cheap
The low cost of the farm produce is passed onto the customer with Imperfect Produce. So you get a huge amount of fresh vegetables and fruit for $10 to $20.
  • Care about Food waste
The US is notoriously bad at wasting food. We all need to do our part to lower the amount of waste in our country.

Imperfect Produce Delivery: How it works

  • Straight from the farm

Imperfect works in the Bay, working with as many farms as they can. The farmers supply the rejected fruit and veggies to Imperfect. They provide the food in real time, so all of the fruit and vegetables are fresh. They may be ugly, but they are delicious and right off the farm.

  • Packed especially for you

The produce is then carefully packed into boxes. We have heard that customers can pick and choose the veggies they way. Everything was well packed, put into separate sections. It wouldn’t do to have bruises on something that is already painfully ugly.

  • Imperfect Produce Delivery

The Imperfect Produce delivery team steps in to bring the box to your house. Customers can choose to get a one time box or have it sent every week.

What are the Costs?

A small box of fresh veggies (there are a lot in the box) will cost customers only $11-$13. The Larger box (which is huge) costs only $25-$27. If you are looking for Organic produce, the price is about $5-$10 more. There is a standard $4.99 shipping fee, which was waived for our first shipment.
